okay! future reference! slash things i learned today:
xorg ubuntu repo has virtual packages set up so you can install the version you need easily with `apt install xorg-video-abi-23` as an example
nomodeset tells the kernel to not use the uh gpu drivers basically
you can temporarily edit kernel parameters in grub with `e`
you can log into the command line with `shift-alt-f3`
i did something that fixed my video but destroyed my inputs but i think i know what the problem is and should be able to fix it
it looks like you can customize the splash screen that displays while loading the os
also my display started flashing with is not a great sign.
@sireffe the Ctrl+Alt+3 thing is just access to vtts, by default 1 through 6 are vtts and 7 is the graphics screen
so you can Ctrl+Alt+1 to access a vtt and then Ctrl+Alt+7 to go back to desktop
if you want to customize stuff, I like xfce4 more than gnome, but ymmv
